A Little Sunday Procrastination

The cabinets are here, and it the correct color, style and material! Amazing! We start demolition in exactly one week! So, what did we do this weekend? Did we start packing up the kitchen? Did we finalize plans with our contractors? Did we settle on paint colors? Nope. We did what all great procrastinators do; we started another, un-related project. Actually, we also finished another, unrelated project!

Subconsciously, I think this was a much- needed escape. All the waiting around and delays on our kitchen remodel finally got to me. I just wanted to finish something. I wanted to cross something off the list. So, we did.  And, it felt so good!

What did we do? Perhaps you remember our garden wall dilemma?

Our neighbors built this fence behind our garden wall, and we found these planter boxes to help disguise the awkwardness of it all.  The planter boxes were a free find on the side of the road. However, they needed a little TLC to bring them back to life. After months of sitting and collecting dust on our back patio, I trotted the boxes out and set out to whip the suckers into shape!

A quick trip to Home Depot later and I was up to my elbows in paint and potting soil.

There is just something so satisfying about painting. It really is the quickest way to spruce up just about anything! After a couple fresh coats of paint, the planters were ready to plant. We chose “superbells,” otherwise known as trailing petunias to plant in two of the boxes – the others will have to wait until we are willing to drop another $100 on gardening. Superbells are known for their long bloom season, ability to withstand heat and lovely trailing affect over planter boxes, and hopefully down our garden wall.

It took us most of the day, but it was a balmy 80 degrees and an amazing way to spend a Sunday!  We do have a few more plans for the wall, including some climbing ivy and a coat of new paint (currently baby blue– yikes!).  For now, it counts as one thing crossed off the list. And, it feels so good!
